The Graveyard Book focuses on story and character rather than ideological messaging. Identity factors don’t overshadow character development; Bod’s growth drives the plot rather than any shoehorned messaging or identity politics. The narrative has a classic coming-of-age feel with little sign of forced representation or flawless diverse characters.

Traditional values aren’t overtly undermined, but as is typical with Gaiman, religion and tradition are backgrounded for the sake of fantasy worldbuilding. Masculinity isn’t mocked; the book treats themes of family, loss, and maturity with a timeless tone. There’s no clear agenda against cultural foundations.

Alternative viewpoints aren’t villainized and the story-world isn’t propped up with modern ideological consensus. While not exactly a celebration of tradition, there’s little in the way of mocking or erasing dissenting perspectives. The book simply doesn’t engage in the woke monoculture trend much at all.
