Flatliners (2017) tries to update the original by injecting more diverse casting and modern identity angles. While the core plot remains intact, some character choices seem motivated by checking diversity boxes rather than organic storytelling, which does distract from the cohesion of the narrative. Still, it's not as overtly agenda-driven as some recent Hollywood efforts.

The film doesn't exactly go after religion or family values directly, but it tends to downplay any significance those have in favor of a sort of modern, secular moralism. Masculinity gets its typical softening, and no traditional values are particularly championed. It's more neutral than aggressively subversive, but still pretty standard for modern Hollywood.

Alternative worldviews aren’t given much serious thought, and characters conveniently align on modern social assumptions. There’s little room for debate or sincere traditional perspectives. However, the film doesn’t go so far as to caricature dissenters, so it’s not the most egregious example, just blandly predictable.
