In our view, 'MaXXXine' appears to prioritize edginess and modern social identity themes, sometimes at the expense of consistent character depth or classic narrative logic. While the protagonist is given a significant focus, her journey is imbued with cultural messaging that may overshadow organic plot development, but it's less overt than in some other recent films.

The film uses its 1980s Hollywood setting to deconstruct traditional notions of fame, sexuality, and morality, regularly challenging or satirizing more classic values. However, it's not a total takedown, rather, it wraps its critique in genre tropes and dark humor, which softens the ideological edge slightly.

While 'MaXXXine' is certainly slanted toward modern sensibilities, there is at least some semblance of pluralism, largely through its focus on the outsider experience. Still, traditional or dissenting perspectives are not sincerely represented, when they appear, they're more often obstacles for the protagonist.
