Classic, even-handed storytelling from a pre-woke era. The Front takes political shots relevant to its historical moment, but ignores the typical identity-based themes and moralizing so common today. Refreshing in how little modern dogma seeps in.

The Front is firmly focused on story and character (with Woody Allen as a schlub caught up in McCarthy-era blacklisting). Casting and character arcs center on plausibility more than identity politics. Identity isn’t foregrounded, so ideological concerns don’t really override narrative integrity.

What is this?

The film is a product of its era and deals with political paranoia. While it gently pokes at government misconduct and institutional hypocrisy, it doesn’t seriously undermine family, religion, or masculinity, instead, it mostly critiques censorship and government overreach.

What is this?

The film lampoons anti-Communist hysteria, so it does give a pointed take on the politics of the time. However, it’s hardly a modern, monolithic woke sermon. There’s some bias against traditional institutions, but it’s not an echo chamber like modern fare can be.
