Assassin’s Creed Odyssey provides the option to play as either a male or female protagonist, both equally skilled, a choice that, while supposedly for player agency, often feels like a nod to forced representation over narrative depth or historical context. Identity choices don’t impact the story significantly, so personality and era-appropriate realism can get lost in the shuffle.

The game sometimes treats traditional Greek religion, heroism, and cultural values with a modern lens, with frequent subversions of expected gender roles and some tongue-in-cheek commentary about masculinity, family, and romance, sometimes taking historical revision a bit far in the name of modern inclusivity.

While the game is less overtly preachy than some contemporaries, most characters quickly accept or ignore the protagonist’s gender/sexual choices (regardless of era), brushing aside traditional perspectives with little debate or pushback, which can come off as a bit one-note.
