While A Gentleman in Moscow is rooted in a classic novel, the series does make some choices, particularly regarding supporting characters, that feel aimed at ticking the modern diversity checklist, occasionally stretching believability for the Soviet era. However, the core of the Count’s story remains intact, preserving much of the original’s character-driven narrative.

There’s some light revisionism, with traditional values and Russia’s cultural heritage seen through a more critical, modern lens. Masculine virtues of stoicism and duty are sometimes sidelined for themes of emotional openness and self-reinvention, a gentle nod toward contemporary sensibilities, but not overbearing.

Alternative viewpoints (especially traditional perspectives) exist but are somewhat simplified, and more progressive outlooks dominate overall. There are few sincere, un-ironic nods to old-school ideals and dissenters are minor at best. Not total uniformity, but the writing is comfy in its modern perspective.
