"Any Day Now" tackles race relations by centering on the friendship of two women, one black, one white, across decades. It examines real social issues, but most of its character choices feel rooted in story and the realities of the era rather than ticking modern identity checkboxes. However, the show sometimes prioritizes messaging over narrative subtlety, so it isn’t entirely free from ideological influence.

The show thoughtfully critiques cultural norms around race and gender, but largely through the lens of authentic personal histories rather than open hostility to religion, family, or tradition. Some traditional values are questioned, but not wholly undermined. For its time, it's moderately progressive, but not radically revisionist by today’s hyper-woke standards.

There’s a clear slant against racism and intolerance (which is hardly controversial), but the portrayal of alternative viewpoints tends toward one-dimensional antagonists. Occasional nuance exists, but the spectrum of debate is limited. Still, the show isn’t nearly as monocultural as more recent entries in the ‘woke TV’ genre.
