While the show does introduce some diverse casting choices and mixes modern sensibilities into the ancient mythos, it largely maintains its focus on character arcs and epic fantasy lore. Identity factors are present, but not entirely overpowering the story, and merit still matters for most characters. The classic adventure remains, albeit with the occasional anachronistic twist.

There are a few moments where traditional gender roles and the gritty nature of the original legend get a modern facelift. However, family, masculinity, and the value of the past aren’t fully jettisoned or overtly mocked. The show attempts to blend familiarity with contemporary twists but doesn't go completely off the rails in undermining core cultural themes.

Alternative worldviews are present, with some reshaping toward modern inclusivity, but there’s still room for traditional perspectives and complexity in characters. Dissenters aren't flat caricatures, and while a hint of ideological updating is evident, it isn’t a total echo chamber. Pluralism and some moral ambiguity survive the trip to the Shieldlands.
