Cry Wolf looks like it leans into current trends of identity-centered storytelling, with major character arcs and plot points revolving around issues of race, gender, and sexuality. This emphasis arguably comes at the expense of organic characterization and traditional story pacing. Some characters appear shoehorned in to tick diversity boxes, rather than serving the narrative naturally.

The show appears to treat traditional family dynamics, religious perspectives, and classic masculinity with a degree of skepticism or outright dismissal. Female and LGBTQ+ characters are positioned as consistently more virtuous or competent, while traditional male roles are often portrayed as problematic or outdated.
