It’s hard not to notice that Star Trek: Discovery often prioritizes identity-first storytelling. Characters are frequently defined by race, gender, or sexuality, and the series makes sure viewers never forget it. Some diverse characters breeze through conflict with minimal personal flaws, and narrative tension occasionally gives way to didactic moments and identity affirmations. The classic Trek focus on merit and exploration often takes a backseat to a modern checklist approach.

Traditional gender roles, masculinity, and cultural touchstones are routinely upended or dismissed. Masculine characters are sidelined or depicted as flawed, while female and LGBTQ+ leads are elevated to near flawless status. Religion or tradition rarely enters discourse except as something to be outgrown or critiqued, driving home the postmodern message. A masterclass in cultural revisionism, for better or worse.

Anyone looking for alternate perspectives or authentic ideological debate will be sorely disappointed. ‘Dissenters’ are cartoonish baddies or token foils who quickly conform or get sidelined. The show’s cast all march to the drum of modern moral orthodoxy, and there’s precious little room for disagreement, debate, or anything other than the current year’s talking points. True pluralism is missing in action.
