The show foregrounds the protagonist’s identity, plus-sized, Black, and queer, as central to nearly every plotline and character arc. In our view, personality and narrative complexity often take a back seat to messaging, and some side characters feel present mainly to tick diversity boxes. This could be seen as narrative taking second fiddle to social themes.

Traditional values like family structure and masculinity are subtly critiqued or shown as outdated, while modern views on sexuality, self-acceptance, and female independence are heavily promoted. There’s a clear effort to subvert conventional gender roles and cultural expectations throughout much of the show’s runtime.

Nearly all characters espouse the same progressive worldview, with conservative or traditional perspectives rarely appearing, when they do, it’s usually as straw men or sources of conflict. The show seems more interested in affirmation than genuine ideological debate or diversity of thought.
