"The Upshaws" does feature a diverse and predominantly black cast, but it generally allows characters to have real flaws and growth. There are moments where identity and progressive themes are made central to the storyline, which sometimes feels like it’s competing with traditional sitcom narrative arcs, but it mostly avoids glaring narrative sacrifices for ideology.

The show pokes fun at family dynamics, masculinity, and traditional values, sometimes portraying the patriarch as bumbling or outdated. It does, however, still celebrate family ties and doesn't completely reject tradition, but there’s a clear leaning toward modern interpretations of family and gender roles.

Most alternative viewpoints, especially those not aligned with more modern social perspectives, are played for laughs or quickly dismissed. Genuine pushback from traditional views is minimal, though the show occasionally highlights generational gaps within the family.
