“Drive Me Crazy” is a late-90s teen rom-com that operates primarily on classic high school tropes. The focus is on character personalities, personal growth, and romance, not ticking diversity boxes or foregrounding identity politics. Casting and character arcs feel natural for the period, with no evidence of forced representation or thematic shoehorning.

The film doesn’t go out of its way to undermine family, tradition, or masculinity. Gender roles are pretty standard for the genre and era: boys act like boys, girls act like girls, with some light rebellion and self-discovery. No effort to subvert or revise traditional norms is present beyond generic teen attempts at independence.

While it does showcase a fairly homogenous, mainstream perspective, that was par for the course in 1999. Dissenting views aren’t caricatured or villainized, they’re just not explored. There’s a little bit of 90s pop-feminism, but nothing overwhelming.
