Return to the Blue Lagoon sticks to a classic romance/survival formula, with minimal emphasis on modern identity politics. Characters are straightforward, their traits and arcs based on realism and timeless storytelling rather than ideological box-ticking. Forced representation is non-existent, and characters come across as flawed and human, even naïve at times, rather than hyper-competent symbols.

The film generally upholds traditional ideas about family, romance, and gender. Masculinity and femininity are presented in conventional ways, with little effort to subvert longstanding norms. Moral dilemmas are handled in relation to survival and human nature, not in order to critique or rewrite societal values. It actually feels almost nostalgic by today’s standards.

It’s tough to even find a character who could serve as a stand-in for modern grievances or cause-based villainy, let alone a uniform parade of politically correct attitudes.
