“The Lost City” tries to balance classic adventure fun with a hefty dose of modern social sensibilities. While not the most egregiously woke blockbuster out there, it can't resist throwing in a few eye-roll moments and trendy messaging along the way.

The film does feature a fair bit of forced representation and leans on modern tropes, but its core narrative is still a classic fish-out-of-water adventure. Character arcs remain somewhat intact, though some jokes and situations seem wedged in to tick diversity boxes rather than to serve the story authentically.

Traditional masculinity is poked fun at, especially with Channing Tatum’s character as a hapless and sensitive male lead, while Sandra Bullock’s character is portrayed as highly capable. However, the movie doesn’t go full scorched-earth on cultural values and keeps things mostly light and comedic.
