While 'Please Like Me' does place emphasis on LGBTQ identity and coming-of-age struggles, it mostly develops its characters with depth and nuance. There is a degree of focus on identity politics, but the show usually avoids reducing its cast to just their sexuality or gender. Some viewers may feel certain storylines veer into ideology over realism at times, but overall narrative integrity holds up reasonably well.
